NEWS // Smoke alarms to be compulsory all articles
The NSW Government has made smoke alarms compulsory in all buildings where people sleep, including homes, hostels, flats, motels and moveable buildings.

The laws, a response to the number of house fires occurring in the winter months from people using fires, heaters and electrical equipment, came into effect from 1 May 2006.

They require the fitting of either battery-operated or hard-wired smoke alarms. In rental accommodation, it will be the responsiblity of the landlord to fit alarms.
